Ray Sweeten
b. 1975 Edison
Data artist and programmer, working in the intersections between image, sound and information systems using a hybrid of digital and analog media. In ’93 Sweeten entered the TIMARA program (Technology In Music And Related Arts) at Oberlin Conservatory of Music and studied with Richard Povall, Todd Winkler, Gary Nelson and composition with Randolph Coleman. He attended Master classes with Pauline Oliveros, Cecil Taylor, and Kaffe Matthews.
In ’98 he acquired a residency at Fabrica, spa. where he collaborated with Michael Galasso (ECM), Robert Wilson, Chieko Mori(Tzadik), and Oliver Grimm. He also produced interstitial music for MTV Japan and Italy, Benetton, Playlife, UNESCO and others. He performed frequently throughout Italy and Europe both solo and under the auspices of FabricaMusica, a collaborative group comprised of musicians from a wide range of cultural and musical backgrounds.
Sweeten has performed and screened work at The Kitchen, PS1, NY Underground Film Festival, San Fransisco Electronic Music Festival, CinemaTexas, The Stone, Liverpool Biennial, Aurora Picture Show, Lux Spain, Monkey Town, Millennium Film Project, Participant Gallery, Pacific Film Archive, Chicago Filmmakers and has held youth workshops for electronic music at Community Musicworks (RI), Vibe Songmakers(NY), and The Guggenheim Museum (NY).
Ray lives and works in Brooklyn NY, has held residencies at Harvestworks and Experimental Television Center and is currently collaborating with the Culturomics research team hosted by Harvard’s Lab at Large.
